G.F.C.I. The
term G.F.C.I. represents Ground Fault Circuit
Interrupter. In short (G.F.I.) meaning ground fault
protection.
The
Purpose:
Annually many people experience electrical shocks and the
unfortunate die from electrocution. Many catastrophes
can be avoided if ground fault protection is in place.
The purpose of ground fault protection is to recognize faults
in wiring circuits, appliances, power tools and devices i.e.
outlets, etc. When faults are detected, the power is
shut down and the flow of electricity is stopped. This
action takes place many times faster than a common fuse or
circuit breaker can respond.
Believe
It Or Not: We
have all heard or read about fatalities involving televisions
or radios falling into the bath tub or swimming pool.
Believe it or not people still have very little respect for
the power of electricity. Code standards can't change
people, but perhaps make our environment a little
safer.
Types
Of Protection:
Standard forms of Ground Fault Protection equipment include a
special circuit breaker located in the homes service panel or
the more convenient form of ground fault outlets.
Areas
Required: The
national electrical code requires any outlet(s) located in the
kitchen, bath, basement, garage and outdoor areas be ground
fault protected. Certain procedures can be followed if
the outlet serves dedicated equipment.
Other
Items: In addition
to outlets, bath fans, and lighting equipment located above
the tub or shower areas must be protected. Most
manufacturers will not warranty their equipment used in these
areas unless ground fault protected.
